Abstract
Social science literature presents compelling evidence that many of disparities stem from lingering prejudice in society against racial and ethnic minorities and perpetuated systems that benefit higher status Whites to the detriment of minorities. This chapter investigates these intergroup dynamics and their impact on society, with a focus on a minority perspective. This complex topic covers psychological, interpersonal, and group-based processes and outcomes. Although these issues could fill a book, this chapter provides an overview of the topic, drawing from varied research in social psychology and relevant findings from other disciplines as applicable. Although the majority of the research described here was conducted in the United States, these finding are not exclusive to the American experience and are supplemented by international research for broader applicability.
