Budgeting Using Boundaries: Empowering Librarians Through Fund Codes

Research output: Contribution to conferencePoster

Abstract

In 2024, DePaul University Library overhauled its collection budget fund code system used to track collection spending. These updated fund codes were then used to give small groups of liaison librarians greater control over budgeting within their areas through a decentralized decision making process. This presentation will delve into the reasoning and structure of the new fund codes, the implementation process, and its impact upon collection development. We will also share how these changes have influenced workflows, budget management, and collaborative decision-making across the library. Additionally, we will assess what has worked well, what hasn't, what we would do differently moving forward, and offer practical insights for institutions considering a similar shift.
